Details

We are supporting a leading organisation in advanced nuclear and clean energy technologies as it expands its systems engineering capability within the UK’s emerging Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme.

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced pump engineer to move from equipment-focused or operational support into system-level nuclear plant design, influencing early design decisions that shape licensing, construction, and long-term operation of next-generation reactors.

The position sits within a central systems engineering group, acting as a technical centre of excellence and supporting plant and reactor systems across the full engineering lifecycle—from concept and design through licensing and long-term delivery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and justify nuclear-grade pump specifications for SMR plant systems.
  • Support system-level design decisions, ensuring pump selection aligns with safety, performance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with system engineers, analysts, and equipment vendors to integrate pump solutions into plant designs.
  • Assess operability, maintainability, testing, inspection, and outage impacts from early design stages.
  • Contribute to design substantiation and regulatory-facing documentation for UK nuclear licensing.
  • Support first-of-a-kind (FOAK) SMR design challenges, balancing innovation with proven engineering practice.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical assessments, and supplier engagements.
  • Apply systems engineering principles across the full lifecycle of plant equipment.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • English required
  • Strong background in pump engineering, including specification, selection, operation, or maintenance
  • Experience in industrial, energy, nuclear, oil & gas, or complex regulated environments
  • Understanding of equipment lifecycle considerations (reliability, maintenance, testing, and inspection)
  • Ability to work across disciplines and influence upstream design decisions
  • Engineering degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Strong technical communication and documentation skills
  • Exposure to established engineering tools such as: Pipe-Flo, HTRI, Mathcad

Location

  • Bristol, UK
